Australian Animals

We have been learning all about Australian animals and have been reading 'Wombat goes walkabout'.

The children have been rein-acting the story, extending their story with their own ideas and Year one children have been writing their own stories!

The children have used chalk to draw pictures and have made collage fire pictures. They have also made their own kangaroo pouches from junk modelling materials.

Didgeridoos!

This week we have been exploring Australian instruments.

Several children have brought in instruments for us to look at and thank you very much for sharing them with us!

We have had a go at making our own didgeridoos!

We are now perfecting how to play them!

digging area

The children are enjoying our new digging area.  They were pretending to be digging like wombats like the Wombat in our story.

wobble boards

As part of our travels to Australia we looked at musical instruments. The children were fascinated by the wobble board.  We looked at how instruments were decorated with dots and lines to make pictures and patterns. Using finger paints and dappers the children had a go at creating their own wobble boards.

Animal dance

The children had red the story Wombat goes walkabout.  They then acted out being the different animals that the wombat met in the story. First they were wombat, who walked, dug and thought a lot. Then they were Kola, who ate and slept, Emu who ran around, Kookaburra who flew in circles, Possum who swing around by his tail, Wallaby who hopped, skipped and jumped and boy who was hunting.  They had great fun and were fantastic at being all the different characters from the story.

Pancake Day fun!

The children had a small halt in their journey around Australia to celebrate Pancake Day.  They started of by looking at Pancake Day and its relation to Easter and Lent.
They had great fun having pancake races and were very competitive.

They also had the chance to try some pancakes with a choice of toppings, lemon, jam or golden syrup.  All the toppings went down well.

The children also talked about what they could do to be helpful and kind leading up to Easter.
